Michele received his BSc degree in Physics in 2003, and his BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science in 2004, 2006 and 2010 respectively, all of them from the University of Pisa, Italy. He was visiting researcher at Universidad de Malaga (Spain) in 2007, at Stony Brook University (New York, USA) in 2009, and before being a researcher he worked as software engineer and wireless technology specialist in private companies in the period 2001-2006, and he founded an SME. In 2006 and 2007 he was involved in EU funded projects SMEPP and XtreemOs, and in the period 2010-2012 he held a post-doctoral researcher position at the Instituto de Telecomunicações (Portugal), where he worked on projects PEACE, C2POWER, GREEN-T, and ROMEO, acting as Technical Manager for GREEN-T and as Work Package Leader for ROMEO. Currently, he is a Research Associate in the CISTER Research Unit of the Polytechnic of Porto, Portugal, working on communication middleware for embedded systems with a focus on the application areas of smart grids, vehicular networks, and green wireless communications. He has been involved in many international research projects, and has taken leadership positions on a number of them. For example, he is leader for two different Work Packages (WP3 “Smart sensing and data acquisition technologies” and WP8 “Dissemination of knowledge and exploitation” for EU ECSEL Joint Undertaking MANTIS “Cyber Physical System based Proactive Collaborative Maintenance”), he has led the research activities on Quality of Service in the context of the EU ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking Arrowhead, and he has led all software development activities leading to the middleware for smart grids developed in the context of the EU ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking ENCOURAGE.
